York Region Speaks Out

In November 2017, York Regional Council voted to take away the public holidays for retail workers in every city and town in the Region. Despite a request to allow one month of public consultation, the decision was pushed through Council in one sitting. The plea of retail workers to reconsider this action was turned down by a majority of York Regional politicians in December.
This means that retail workers will have to be available 364 days a year to work – only Christmas Day is exempt. Why the urgency? Why wasn’t the public notified? And most importantly, why weren’t those who work in retail ever asked for their opinion?

This is not democracy.

The pace of life is getting faster and faster, and everyone deserves some time to spend with their families and loved ones.   Help us call for full public consultation and a review of the flawed by-law that will strip thousands of York Region residents of their right to spend precious time with their families.
